Be the plumber they find at 11pm — and the one AI names.

Plumbing is bought in a hurry. The customer is standing in water, on a phone, and will ring the first two or three results they see. Everything about getting found in that moment is different from ordinary local SEO — and increasingly the first result is not a list at all, but an assistant naming somebody.

Where plumbing businesses lose visibility

Three problems that come up in almost every trade audit.

None of them is exotic. They are simply the things that get skipped when the business is busy doing the actual work, which is most of the time.

01

Google does not know where you work

Most plumbers have a van, not a shop. If your Google listing is set up around an address rather than a service area, or your website never names the towns you cover in plain words, you are invisible in half the places you would happily drive to.

02

Emergency searches are answered by somebody else

"Burst pipe", "no hot water", "blocked drain at night" — these are separate searches with separate intent, and they rarely lead to a homepage. If there is no page that answers the specific problem, the enquiry goes to whoever wrote one.

03

The call gets missed and the job is gone

You cannot answer the phone from under a sink. In this trade the customer does not leave a voicemail and wait — they call the next result. That loss never appears in any ranking report, which is why it goes unnoticed for years.

That third one is measurable before you spend anything. The free missed-lead calculator puts a monthly figure on it using your own numbers, and shows every step of the arithmetic.

The AI-search layer

"Who should I call about a leak in Doncaster?"

That question used to produce a list. Increasingly it produces a recommendation — one or two names, with a sentence about each. There is no second page to be on, and no advert slot to buy. You are either the business the assistant can describe confidently, or you are not mentioned.

What decides it is not clever writing on your homepage. Assistants trust what they can corroborate from more than one place: your Google listing, trade directories, review platforms, a trade body listing, local press, and pages of yours that answer real questions in plain words. A plumber whose details match everywhere and who has answered the obvious questions gets named. One whose only description is their own homepage usually does not.

The good news for trades is that the bar is low. Most of your competitors have not done any of this, and much of it is a week of unglamorous tidying rather than a campaign.

What gets checked in a plumbing audit

  • Service-area setup on your Google listing
  • Emergency and problem-led search coverage
  • One page per service that earns one
  • Town pages that say something true
  • Name, address and phone consistency
  • Licensing, insurance and trade body signals
  • Review volume, recency and replies
  • Whether AI assistants can read and describe you
  • Mobile speed on a poor connection
  • What happens to an enquiry after it arrives

Published plumbing work

A real audit, written up in full.

Rather than describe the method, here is one applied to an actual plumbing business — including the part where the technical problems had to be fixed before any SEO work was worth doing.

Both are honest about what they are. Sample projects are labelled as sample projects, and client work is only published with written permission. You will not find invented results anywhere on this site.

Questions

Straight answers before you enquire.

What makes plumber SEO different from ordinary local SEO?

Urgency and geography. The customer is on a phone, in a hurry, and will book whoever answers first. And you have a van rather than a shop, so Google has to understand a service area instead of an address. Those two facts change which pages you need and why a missed call costs more than a lost ranking.

Do I need a page for every town?

Only where you can say something true and specific about working there. Thin pages with the town name swapped in and out are the most common self-inflicted wound in trade SEO — Google has discounted them for years, and AI assistants skip them because there is nothing distinctive to quote.

How do AI assistants pick which plumber to name?

By what they can corroborate about you from more than one place: directories, review platforms, trade bodies, local press, and your own plainly written pages. Consistent details across those, plus real answers to common questions, is most of the work.

Do reviews matter that much?

For emergency work, close to decisively — the customer has no other way to judge you and no time to look. Recency counts as much as volume, and asking for them reliably is an automation problem more than a marketing one.

I get calls but few turn into jobs.

Then visibility probably is not your bottleneck. Missed calls, forms nobody owns, quotes never followed up — those are worth measuring first, because more traffic into a leaking bucket changes very little.

Can you guarantee I will rank first?

No, and nobody honest can. What is controllable is removing the reasons you are currently skipped, and being clear about what changed and what did not.
