Answer Engine Optimization • Featured snippets • Voice • AI answers

Being quoted beats being ranked.

Answer Engine Optimization is the work of becoming the source a system quotes when it answers a question outright, rather than the result somebody clicks in a list. That covers featured snippets, voice assistants, Google's AI Overviews and chat assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — all of which hand the user an answer, and credit at most one or two businesses in the process.

The terminology, honestly

AEO, GEO and SEO are not three products.

The industry has produced three acronyms for what is largely one job, and some agencies now sell them as three retainers. Here is the actual distinction, and where it stops mattering.

TermWhat it aims atWhere it shows up
SEOGetting your page ranked in a list of results, where position three still earns clicks. The ordinary blue links, and the Map Pack.
AEOGetting your content used as the answer itself. Predates AI chat — snippets and voice have worked this way for years.Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI Overviews.
GEOThe newer term for the same goal, specifically inside generative AI answers.ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot.

Where it stops mattering: the underlying work is roughly eighty percent the same for all three. A crawlable site, clear business facts, answers written before the sales pitch, and evidence you exist elsewhere on the web. Anyone quoting you three separate retainers is charging three times for one body of work.

Why it changed

The click is no longer the prize.

For twenty years the deal was straightforward: rank, get clicked, get the visitor. That deal is being renegotiated without anyone asking site owners. A user asks a question, receives a written answer, and often never visits anything. Some of those answers name a business. Most do not name yours.

This is not the end of SEO, and it is worth being sceptical of anyone who says it is. Answer engines still run on crawlers, still read the same pages, and still favour sites that are technically sound. A site that cannot be crawled is invisible to both. What has changed is the payoff: ranking tenth used to be worth something, and being the eleventh-best source in an answer is worth nothing at all.

For a small local business this is closer to an opportunity than a threat. Answer engines are looking for a specific, confident, corroborated source in a category — and in most local markets nobody has bothered to become one.

What AEO work actually involves

  • Answering the question in the first two or three sentences
  • One page per question people actually ask
  • Business facts stated identically everywhere
  • Structured data so nothing has to be inferred
  • Getting mentioned somewhere you do not own
  • Keeping AI readers allowed rather than accidentally blocked
  • Measuring mentions and referrals over months

Notice what is absent: tricks, keyword density, and anything that would embarrass you if a customer read it.

In practice

Four changes that do most of the work.

In an audit these come up again and again, in roughly this order of impact.

01

Answer first, sell second

Most pages open with positioning and get to the answer in paragraph four. Answer engines lift the passage that answers directly, so a page that warms up gets skipped in favour of a competitor who simply said the thing.

02

Say your facts out loud

Hours, service area, prices, what you do and do not cover. Written as text, repeated consistently everywhere, and stated again in structured data so no system has to guess. Contradictions between sources are the quickest way to be left out.

03

Be described by somebody else

Everything on your own site is a claim. A directory entry, a trade body listing, a review platform or a local news mention is evidence. Answer engines lean on what they can corroborate, which is why a well-written homepage alone rarely gets you named.

04

Check you are not shut out

Plenty of sites turn AI readers away by accident, through a website builder default or a security add-on. Nothing else on this list can work while that stands, and almost nobody discovers it without looking.

That last one you can settle today. Run the free readiness scorecard and ask for the written report — I will check whether your site is shutting AI assistants out and email you the answer.

Questions

Straight answers about AEO.

What is AEO, in one sentence?

Becoming the source a system quotes when it answers a question directly, instead of the result someone clicks in a list of ten.

Is AEO just a new name for SEO?

Not quite, but the overlap is large. SEO aims at ranking, AEO aims at being quoted, and roughly eighty percent of the underlying work is shared. The honest position is that it is one job with a shifted target, not a separate discipline with a separate invoice.

Do I need this if my SEO already works?

You are most of the way there already. A site that ranks is crawlable and structured, which is the foundation. What usually needs adding is answering questions early, stating facts machine-readably, and being corroborated off your own site.

Can you guarantee I'll be quoted?

No. Answer selection is decided by systems that change often and publish no criteria. What can be done is removing the reasons you would be skipped, and being honest about what moved and what did not.

How long before anything changes?

Months, not days. Content has to be found and re-crawled, third-party mentions take time to appear, and assistants update their picture of a business slowly. Anyone promising a fortnight is guessing.

Is this only worth it for big brands?

Currently the opposite. Most small businesses have done none of it, so the bar in a local market is low enough that consistency and a few plain answers can make you the obvious thing to quote.
