Todd Plumbing: security and local search audit

A plumbing company in Zanesville, Ohio with real local history and valuable services. The audit reviewed the site from two angles at once: how a homeowner would experience it, and how Google would interpret it. The two views disagreed sharply.

The finding that changed the order of work

The most urgent issue was not a keyword problem.

The site showed evidence of injected spam links along with a malware and spam warning in the supporting evidence. That finding reordered everything else in the report.

Security cleanup had to come before redesign, blogging or any ongoing SEO work. Ranking improvements built on a compromised site are wasted effort — and continuing to publish while the problem persists can deepen the damage.

This is why an audit should look at trust signals before it looks at keywords. A report that had gone straight to content strategy would have been thorough, professional, and wrong.

Findings

Five issues, ordered by urgency.

01

Injected spam links and malware warning

Treated as urgent and placed before all other recommendations. Nothing else in the report should begin until this is resolved.

02

No structured data

The site carried no Plumber or LocalBusiness schema, leaving business details and service areas unclear to search engines and AI systems.

03

Mobile zoom disabled

The site blocked normal pinch-to-zoom, creating both an accessibility failure and a mobile usability problem.

04

Review gap in the map pack

The business showed substantially fewer reviews than key competitors in the reviewed map snapshot — a direct factor in local prominence.

05

Generic service copy

Content read as stock plumbing text rather than anything specific to this company or to Zanesville.

What the report included

Deliverables in the audit document.

  • Security evidence appendix: screenshots and validation notes supporting the urgent finding.
  • Competitor comparison: local visibility gap against the businesses winning the map pack.
  • Recommended website structure: a concrete architecture, not a list of complaints.
  • Sample SEO fixes: implementation notes written to be handed to a developer.
  • Limitations and disclaimer: an explicit statement of what the audit could and could not verify from outside.

Scope note

What this project is and is not.

This is an independent sample project prepared for portfolio purposes. It is not affiliated with, commissioned by, or endorsed by the business named, and no client implementation or measured result is claimed.

Security findings were drawn from publicly observable evidence only. A full security assessment requires server-level access and is outside the scope of an SEO audit.
