Why Your Business Needs GEO
Your business needs GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) because more customers are asking ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity before they contact anyone, and AI can only name businesses whose details are clear and consistent. GEO is the work of making those details clear, on your own site and everywhere else AI reads.
Three reasons I put GEO in every audit
- People ask questions now. They don't type keywords. “A trustworthy SEO consultant in Bandung” gets answered in one paragraph, with only a handful of names in it.
- AI quotes sources. It doesn't make them up. If the address on your site doesn't match Google Maps, AI hesitates. So does Google.
- The work isn't wasted. A fast, tidy site helps in regular Google and in AI answers at the same time.
Three things I actually do
- Spell out who you are to machines (entity optimisation). With schema markup such as Organization, Service and LocalBusiness, so AI knows exactly what your business does and doesn't have to guess.
- Get you mentioned elsewhere (authoritative citations). Local press, directories, LinkedIn. AI learns from the whole web, not just your website.
- Write the way people answer questions (conversational tone). The answer in the first sentence, numbers you can check, and no claims you can't prove.
A real example from one audit
In August 2026 I audited a WooCommerce store for a manufacturer in Indonesia (name withheld, data recorded on 25 August 2026). Keywords weren't the problem. These basics were making the site hard for machines to read, AI included:
| Finding | Audit data | Why it trips up machines |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile speed | Score of 56 on mobile, 75 on desktop | Pages open slowly, so I fixed mobile first |
| Image weight | 23 MB across nine files, including two 4.6 MB banners | Visitors and crawlers both wait longer |
| Missing CSS | 5 Elementor stylesheets returning 404 | Pages can break visually and quality signals weaken |
| Thin pages | 23+ commercial pages under 200 words | Too little to quote or use as an answer |
Every one of those numbers led to one specific fix. That's everyday GEO: make the site fast and clear enough that a machine doesn't have to guess. The full case study is here.
Where to start
- Let AI bots in. Check
robots.txtand make sure GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended aren't blocked. - Make your details match. Name, address, phone and opening hours should be identical on your site, Google Business Profile and social media.
- Put the answer first. On every service page and article, the direct answer goes in the first paragraph, the explanation after.
- Add the right schema, and make sure it says the same thing as the visible page.
- Collect real reviews on Google Maps that mention your service by name.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my business need GEO?
Because customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity before they contact anyone. AI can only name businesses whose details are clear and consistent, and GEO is the work of making them so.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO is built on top of SEO. A fast, tidy site that bots can read helps in Google and in AI answers at the same time.
What does GEO work actually involve?
Three main things: spelling out who you are to machines with schema markup, getting mentioned on other sites people trust, and writing content that answers the customer's question in the first sentence.
Where do I start if my business is small?
Start with what's free: make sure robots.txt isn't blocking AI bots, make your name, address and phone number match everywhere, then rewrite your main service page so the answer comes first.
